Dance Instructor / DJ / Event Host
I started Salsa En St. Pete (as Salsa with Greg), so people would have a place to go out dancing in St. Pete. Since our first event @ BayWalk in March 2004, tens of thousands of people have come out dancing and I have personally taught over 10,000 people how to dance Salsa (as well as Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha, & Tango). You should be next!
I was born and raised in Ohio and until 1998, I was not a dancer. I didn't grow up dancing. The music I listened to, didn't lend itself to partnership dancing and I never took the time to learn any dances. I was one of those kids, at the Junior High & High School dances, who sat on the bleachers watching, jealously, as the other kids moved their bodies to the music. Yeah, most were off beat and looked like they were having a seizure, but they were out on the dance floor having fun. We didn't have but one or two dances a year and I think I have been to three weddings in my life, so it never really occurred to me what I was missing out on.
I moved to Florida, from Ohio, in July of 1993. In the spring of 1994, a friend of mine, Hannah, asked if I would attend a Ballroom dance class with her because she needed a partner. I was curious and said I would attend. It was love at first step! It was not a time in my life where I could keep up with the lessons, but I promised to continue when I could.
In October 1998, another friend of mine, Mynde, brought me an ad that said Fred Astaire Dance Studios was "looking for Dance Instructors - No Experience Necessary." I spent two years at Fred Astaire Dance Studios and was formally trained in 13 dances including Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Cha Cha, Swing, etc. Very quickly, however, I grew disillusioned with Fred Astaire Dance Studios' business practices and decided to strike out on my own. After my 12-month non-compete expired, I started teaching wedding couples how to dance for their "First Dance." I still do that today (www.FirstDancesbyGreg.com) and get a tremendous amount of joy from each of the couples I work with.
Just before I left Fred Astaire Dance Studios, I met Carol. She is the one responsible for my introduction to Salsa. She and I danced together for four years and taught together for three.
It is true that anything you set your mind to you can do. With dancing, you just have to have it in your mind that you would like to feel comfortable in a social setting and allow me to take care of the rest.
